Interbrand Evolves Leadership in Shanghai, Thomas Chen Named Managing Director

SHANGHAI (28 FEBRUARY 2012) Interbrand, the world’s leading brand consultancy, formalized the appointment of Thomas Chen as Managing Director of its Shanghai office.

Chen first joined Interbrand in 2008, where he was responsible for overseeing the firm’s strategy practice throughout the greater China region, including Hong Kong and Taiwan. Having led key client engagements, bolstering both the profitability and client roster of Interbrand China, he was named Executive Director in 2010.

In stepping into the role of Managing Director of Interbrand Shanghai, Chen will lead cross-disciplinary teams deepening client engagements and will further the thought leadership and creativity that Interbrand is known for within the Greater China region.

Commenting on the appointment, Jez Frampton, Interbrand Global Chief Executive Officer said, “Thomas possesses a deep understanding of the landscape of the Chinese market. He is keenly aware of the opportunities that exist for Chinese brands, both domestically and internationally. Through this insight, he has proven to be a valuable leader overseeing corporate brand programmes for clients such as Huawei, Vanke, and Bank of China.”

In 2011, Chen played a pivotal role in raising the profile of Interbrand’s Best China Brands report, speaking at a press event at the World Economic Forum in Dalian, China. He was also responsible for leading the team behind the successful launch of the 2011 Top Taiwan Brands and, most recently, he spoke at the launch of Japan’s 2011 Best Global Brands.

“Thomas is a brand believer and practitioner,” said Stuart Green, CEO of Interbrand Asia Pacific. “Along with our China senior management team, he has been instrumental in contributing to the growth of Interbrand China. I have the utmost confidence that his drive, passion, and dedication will not only continue the growth of our business in the region, but will serve to inspire colleagues and clients as Interbrand enters its second successful decade in China.”

Prior to Interbrand, Chen was head of the marketing department at several multinational companies, including Vice President of Marketing at eLong Inc. (the subsidiary of Expedia in China), Director of Marketing at Ting Hsin International, and Category Manager at SC Johnson. Cumulatively, he brings more than 11 years of FMCG marketing experience and significant global exposure, having worked in China, North America and Taiwan.
